John (Jason Robards), an elderly man, recently widowed, asks his son Jim to come along with the whole family. However, Jim prefers to celebrate this year at his home. John, then, is looking for an alternative to not spend Christmas alone, when he finds an ad in the newspaper that says "You are not alone. We arrange social gatherings of all kinds". The ad agency gets him a date with Iris (Julie Harris), a mature woman. She asks him not to talk about any personal details. The evening is very enjoyable for both, though, she hides a secret that will change everything.
